Law enforcement leaders oppose bill to block immigration enforcement

A group of Maryland law enforcement leaders oppose legislation that would block counties from participating in a federal immigration enforcement program. The Maryland state Senate will take up House Bill 1222 next week to local participation in the federal Delegation of Immigration Authority Section 287(g) Immigration and Nationality Act. The jail-based program allows state agencies to carry out certain immigration enforcement under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement supervision. Currently, Cecil, Frederick and Harford counties participate. Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins is a vocal supporter. embers of Maryland's immigrant community held an interfaith rally on Monday in support of the House bill, arguing the 287(g) program doesn't protect against racial profiling.
