JHU research suggests Key Bridge collapse was preventable

Amid an ongoing investigation into exactly why the Dali cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, new research — and a news conference last week — called into question whether the collapse could have been prevented. Michael Shields, an associate professor of civil and systems engineering at Johns Hopkins University, found that the Key Bridge was one of the top 10 most vulnerable bridges in the country at the time when the Dali struck it, causing its collapse. Shields spent the past year assessing the risk of ship collisions with America's bridges, leading to the release of his report on Monday.
