Snakes played an important role in the history of Ancient Egypt. The deadly venomous Egyptian cobra (Naja haje) was worshipped as the protective deity Wadjet. Some historicians also think that Cleopatra VII, the
Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, killed herself by allowing a cobra to bite her. Symbols of a cobra (or a snake in general) and a Sahara horned viper (Cerastes cerastes) are two of the hieroglyphic symbols. Until today, visitors to many historical sites in Egypt can admire various symbols of snakes. One of them is the Cobra wall in Sakkara. Snakes, like the Egyptian cobra, North-East African carpet viper (Echis pyramidum) or the Egyptian sand boa (Eryx colubrinus) are common in agricultural lands near the river Nile. Snakebites happen in Egypt and, luckily, antivenom is produced in the country.
