Sofia is the capital and the largest city in Bulgaria
It is the 15th largest city in the European Union, with a population of 1,399,289 (as of December 2023).

Sofia Municipality is a legal entity with its own property - public and private, and its own budget. The governing bodies of the municipality - the Sofia Municipal Council and the Mayor - are elected by the citizens of Sofia Municipality for a term of 4 years.

Sofia Municipality is divided into 24 districts. The mayors of the districts solve the issues arising from the daily needs of the population in terms of residence, administrative services to citizens, public works, sanitation, etc.

Sofia is situated in the Sofia field with an altitude of about 550 metres on an area of 1,311 square kilometres, of which the settlements and urbanised areas occupy 245.5 square kilometres, the agricultural areas cover 509 square kilometres, the forest areas 466.5 square kilometres, the areas for extraction of minerals - 40.5 square kilometres, the areas for transport and infrastructure - 20.6 square kilometres and watercourses and water areas - about 40 square kilometres. The area is also rich in mineral waters.

The capital of Bulgaria is surrounded on three sides by mountains:
Vitosha to the south, Lyulin to the west and Stara Planina to the north. This is the reason why some parts of the city are at an altitude of over 650 meters. This makes it one of the highest capital cities in Europe.

Several low-water rivers flow through Sofia.
Their beds in the city's features have been corrected. The larger ones are the Iskar, the Vladayska, the Perlovska, the Sukhodolska, the Slatinska, the Boyanska, the Bistriiska, the Bankyanska. The main drainage artery is the meridian valley of the Iskar River.

Sofia was proclaimed the capital on 22 March 1879 (new style on 3 April 1879) by the First Constituent National Assembly held in Veliko Tarnovo after the Liberation.

Sofia is the main administrative, industrial, transport, cultural and university centre of Bulgaria. It is home to: the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and most of its scientific institutes, many universities and academies, theatres, cinemas, as well as the National Art Gallery, archaeological, historical, natural history and other museums.
