Why Playing Video Games Makes You DUMB

Contrary to popular belief that video games make you dumb, studies have been conducted to support and oppose this statement. One found that video game play has benefits to the brain in terms of growth in regions responsible for spatial recognition, memory formation and strategic motor skills as well as fine motor skills. This test was conducted with a sample group mean age of 24 playing the Super Mario 64 video game. Over the course of 2 months with 30 minute sessions, those test subjects showed increases of grey matter in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum measured with an MRI.

Anything in excess is not good for you. Even too much water in excess can be bad. Did your parents ever tell you to eat your vegetables? Broccoli in excess is also bad. I’m not saying don’t eat your vegetables, I’m just saying too much of something that is known to be good can be bad..

As you get older have you noticed your vision becoming worse and worse? According to a study conducted by a professor at the University of Rochester, action video games such as first person shooters, improves a player's real-world vision and their ability to perceive changes in shades of grey. This may not seem special but it's long been thought that the ability to discern different shades of grey could not be improved. Action video games have been shown to reduce visual crowding and increase visual attention. For example, have you ever played a video game or seen a gamer play a game and they’re able to see that player over 1500meters away and hit a headshot? Game graphics have improved so much in the last few decades that I still couldn’t see that player but hardcore gamers seem to do so.

It has also been seen in elderly who play some video games that promote mental thinking and visual exercise from time to time slow aging about 7 years because playing that game requires an elevated amount of mental effort to play.

I’ve personally played video games throughout my life at healthy to obsessive levels but still managed to get through school, go to college, and work. If anything, my vision in general has become worse over the years from my youthful 20/20 vision, but I don’t think that’s solely from playing video games but just being in front of a screen mainly from work the last 10 years.

There are even games that simulate a lot of jobs today or even supplement learning! Technology has advanced in modern medicine where you have doctors operating on patients from screens using controls to make precise cuts and maneuvers. Research also has shown doctors with previous exposure to video games growing up have lower rates of error. Video games have shown business benefits like Minecraft where server owners can make millions by setting up a video games server others can enjoy utilizing skills they learn in the real world. Solving complex problems and puzzles with analytical approaches exercises the left side of the brain but as mentioned earlier, the right side of the brain has shown brain growth playing similar games. It is also researched that the brain make up of a gamer is different from those who don’t play games ie the ‘gamer brain’.

None of these skills matter unless you exercise these skills in the real world. So do video games make you dumb? Enjoy video games in moderation, get out some time to enjoy life and learn new things to make your life that much better because that is how you can gain the 1up in life.
