Commonly set from 1986 to 1997, the “golden era” of hip-hop describes a period of incredible growth for the hip-hop culture. Between the spread of sampling, the beginning of the East-Coast vs. West-Coast, and a general diversification of the hip-hop genre, we could spend days explaining how intense the artistic activity in hip-hop was during this period of time where some of the most acclaimed rap albums were produced, and a lot of hip-hop legendary songs were written.

Among all these legends, the Natives Tongues, an East-Coast collective that was active in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, that was arguably one of the most influential hip-hop groups of this period. Close to the International Zulu Nation, as they both promoted good minded vibes and Afrocentric culture, the Native Tongues regrouped numerous artists from New York and beyond, gathered around a common artistic vision. The Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Black Sheep, Chi-Ali, and a lot of other sub members of the tribe inspired each other and collaborated on their respective projects, but also paved the way for each other’s successes, and that of those that have kept conscious hip-hop alive through the ages.
