China is experiencing Super Typhoon Doksuri, one of the most powerful Pacific tropical storms in recent years. At the moment, the element, which brought with it a hurricane wind and incredible downpours, although it has weakened, continues to rage in the Beijing area. At the same time, forecasters are talking about the emergence of another destructive storm in this region.
A week ago, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) began to record a low pressure zone in the Philippine Sea, which quickly began to turn into a tropical storm the next day. Further, the nascent hurricane was seen by Philippine weather forecasters, who called it "Egay". Two days later, it rapidly intensified, reaching the status of a typhoon. At the same time, with the help of satellites, specialists for the first time recorded the eye-shaped structure of a cyclone, characteristic of powerful tropical storms. Doksuri soon became a super typhoon, the highest category storm with sustained wind speeds in excess of 240 km/h (149 mph).
First, Doksuri hit the Philippines, causing the deaths of several dozen people. During severe floods in the northern part of the island state, 36 local residents were killed.
The hurricane then moved to Taiwan, where it knocked down hundreds of trees, leaving 278,000 homes without power. Rainfall in some areas of the island exceeded 1 m (40 in).
Doksuri soon made its way to southern China, where it uprooted trees, cut power lines and flooded the streets with torrential rains. The authorities were forced to close most of the manufacturing enterprises and shopping centers, and about half a million buildings were left without electricity. The elements one way or another affected the lives of about 1 million people in the south of China, more than 100 thousand of whom were evacuated or resettled.
Then "Doksuri" went to the north of the country, reaching its capital - Beijing. According to local authorities, it was the most powerful typhoon to hit the city since Hurricane Rita in 1972, which left significant damage and numerous casualties. Summer floods in northern China happen almost every year, but the current situation is called the worst in the last half century.
"Doksuri" gradually begins to weaken and disintegrate, however, a new typhoon is heading towards China - called "Hanun", which could hit the country as early as this week. The storm is currently near the Japanese island of Okinawa, bringing with it winds of about 200 km/h (124 mph). At least 20,000 residents in the city of Naha have been advised to urgently evacuate. Hundreds of flights at the local airport have been cancelled.
