STORYLINE
Germany's dream of reaching the World Cup final in front of a home crowd came to a cruel end on Tuesday as opponents Italy scored two goals in the dying minutes of extra time in the semi-final in Dortmund.
The match went to extra time after the score remained 0-0 at full time.
With one minute of extra time remaining, Italy's Fabio Grosso twisted a left-footed shot into the far side of the net.
Alessandro del Piero clinched the 2-0 win in injury time with a counterattacking goal as Germany pressed desperately to equalise.
German fans watching the match unfold on giant video screens in Dortmund were devastated by the result.
"Of course, I am very sad and disappointed, but I guess in the end Italy played better," one supporter told AP Television.
"I am disappointed, I really believed we were going to the final. It was a bad, bad game," another German fan said.
Germany went into the match with high hopes - not having lost any of its previous 14 games in Dortmund.
However, they also never before had beaten Italy at a World Cup tournament - and that second tradition proved to be stronger.
Germany's young team had exceeded pre-tournament expectations by getting to the semi-finals - sparking a surge of national pride.
During the tournament, "Berlin, Berlin, we're going to Berlin" became a favourite chant as supporters became confident that the squad would reach Sunday's final in the capital.
The disappointment on the fans' faces following the loss to Italy's Azzuris spoke volumes.
About 200-thousand people watched the game in Dortmund.
Police said some fights broke out in the city after the game but had no information on arrests.
