Successful American actions on Marshall Islands demanded continued pressure on Japanese defences and the launch of the next major operation in the Central Pacific area. Urging by the Air Force, the Navy turned its attention to Guam, Tinian and Saipan, the three largest islands in the Marianas. First in line for the invasion was the second-largest island in the archipelago, Saipan.
