At 4.30pm on Wednesday the 16th of February 2022, shocked fisherman witnessed a horrific incident in the water. They described a 4 meter great white bite a swimmer in half. They said the shark then attacked the body several times, then came back and took the remains underwater, Turning the ocean red with blood.
Fishermen and bystanders immediately called emergency services and they were quick to act. Swimmers were ordered to clear the water at 13 local beaches as a full scale operation in the sea and sky took place.
Local lifesavers on jet skis found remains of the victim and had the daunting task of collecting them and bringing them back to land for officials to undertake forensic analysis and try to identify the swimmer.
The swimmer was identified at 35 year old Sydney man, Simon Nellist who was training for the up and coming Malabar Magic Ocean Swim. A charity swim from one beach, around the headland to the other return, In total the swim 5 kilometres which is equivalent to swimming 100 laps of an Olympic pool.
Ironically Simon was a dive instructor, an avid swimmer and a lover of marine life. He had served time in the Royal Air Force.
Sadly. He was due to be married to his fiancé last year, but it had been put off due to the pandemic. He was described by all who knew him as a kind and wonderful human being.
The shark attack occurred just off Little bay which is 7 kilometres from Bondi beach.
Some media outlets and social media users were quick to attack and blame the fisherman saying they had thrown out discarded fish guts into the sea to attract the shark closer to the shore.
But experts slammed this as being inaccurate. Stating the reason the shark was there was due to the warmer currents in the water from the La Nina weather cycle. They also made a point that the swimmer was 150m from the beach and that the shark may have thought he was a seal due to the black wetsuit.
When you add all of the above, it was just a whole series of unfortunate events that led to the tragedy.
As Australia opens back up to the world again, the question remains? Is it still safe to swim in Australia?
What you have to remember is that this was the first fatal shark attack in Sydney, Australia in nearly 60 years. The last occurring in 1963 when Actor Marcia Hathaway was tragically killed at middle harbour in Sydney
