20 years later and the sequel to Driver finally gets a PC port. It's perfect, too. Using debug symbols from localizations of Driver 2 the original game is reverse engineered in its entirety, feeling 1:1 with the original game. It also comes with some improvements, like consistent 30 FPS and better (but not unlimited) draw distances. Controllers are also supported out of the box (in the case of my Xbox One controller at least) with bindings matching the DualShock PS1 controller. Just don't use the analog stick for on-foot. You might notice that there is no FMV or voice lines, that's because extracting it requires a different process than just copying files from the CD-ROMs. It works once you extract it but I wasn't interested in following the plot. Being open source there are also plans for further development, like enhancing graphics a bit and even running Driver 1 maps (according to a Discord contributer). Proper mod support is mentioned but I don't think it will be as much of a priority, as The Driver Syndicate is already set to be the super moddable Driver fangame that the community is looking for.
As for Driver 2 itself, it's good. Fun, weighty driving matched with excruciatingly difficult missions, although you don't see that early on of course. It was a technical improvement over the first Driver on PS1, featuring bigger cities with curved roads and more detailed car models, but the cost on the original hardware was sub-par to bad performance, with sub-30 FPS being the norm. Of course performance is no longer an issue on PC.
