Turkana Human Google Doodle - Изправеният човек от Кения!!! Everything You Need to Know about Turkana Boy ...Turkana boy is the name given to the fossil KNM-WT15000. Google shows a doodle to celebrate Turkana Human in a few countries.
It is a complete skeleton of a young Homo erectus believed to have lived about 1.5 to 1.6 million years ago.
This specimen is the oldest and most complete human skeleton ever discovered. This fossil was found in 1984 by Kamoya Kimeu, a member of the exploration team led by Richard Leakey. The fossil site is Nariokotomi near Lake Turkana in Kenya. The age of the boy at the moment of death is estimated between 7 to 11 years.
It is agreed that this sample belongs to a male most likely due to the shape of the pelvis, but the gender is not completely specified due to the age of the sample that precedes puberty. Estimates of age at the moment of death depend on determining the stage of maturity of the teeth or skeleton, or if we can compare the maturity of this sample with that of modern humans or chimpanzees.
The main factor in the difference between humans and chimpanzees, that is, modern humans have a specific sign of puberty, which is height, but it is not present in chimpanzees. Early research assumed some form of modern human development, but recent evidence from other fossils indicates that this factor was not common in early humans.
This greatly influences the estimate of both the age and structure of this sample, and therefore as an adult. In 1993, Alan Walker and Richard Leakey estimated the age of the Turkana boy, and believed it to be about 11-12 years based on known rates of bone maturation. Walker and Leckie (1993) argue that an age estimate based on forensic dentistry often gives a person a younger age than his actual age.
Christopher Dean of University College London showed that the Turkana boy was 8 years old at his death. 2010 that a Turkana boy “will grow from 5 to 14 cm before reaching puberty. If the boy was 8 to 10 years old at the time of his death, his height would be 154 cm, and he would grow much faster than modern humans, but his growth would be slower than that of chimpanzees.
According to this scenario, a Turkana boy would have the stature of an adult male ranging from 159 cm to 168 cm. According to the selected growth and development models, the boy will be fully grown by the time he reaches his twelfth year (4 years after his death), so we can say that a large percentage of the growth process has taken place.”
